Quote

“Let me fall if I must fall. The one I will become will catch me.”

- Baal Shem Tov

Quote

  • Too often, when we look ahead, we overestimate the difficulty of challenges we may face and underestimate our ability to cope in those situations. This miscalculation often creates undue anxiety and stress.
  • Trust your future self. . . that person will have more experience than you do.

Question

What are you doing today to take care of yourself tomorrow?

Question

  • We create the life we’ll lead tomorrow through the decisions we make today. When emotions run high and impulses pull us in different directions, it can be easy to mentally disconnect from the lasting impact of our actions.
  • We can’t escape the natural consequences of our choices. Sooner or later, we reap what we sow.
  • Unfortunately, sometimes the ways we “reward” ourselves in the present create a punishment we will face later on. Your future self needs your care and protection–make decisions they will thank you for.

Your Future Self: How to Make Tomorrow Better Today by Hal Hershfield

  • We tend to treat our future selves like strangers. Unfortunately, when the present takes precedence over the future, it can negatively impact our long-term decision-making. Indulging ourselves today with little regard for how our choices may impact us later can have a negative impact on our wellbeing. To prevent future regret, we need to make the connection between our future and current selves more salient.
  • Too often, we think about the future superficially. It’s easy to procrastinate and put things off without a full appreciation of what’s on the line if we delay or don’t take action.
  • Consider how you can use external accountability to help you keep commitments to your future self. Identify people in your life who can support and challenge you. Also, think about how you might leverage systems or technology to help you stay on track toward your goals.

Today, I am prioritizing

to ensure my future self enjoys a healthy ____________.

DRAIN & GAIN: CALCULATE YOUR ENERGY MATH

Your emotional energy is a precious resource. It’s how you think, plan, decide, and create. In our lives, there are people and things that put fuel in our tanks, and there are forces that drain them. Your energy is your responsibility to manage and protect. Carefully consider the inputs and outputs that are helping or keeping you from creating balance. What is your energy level today? If you’re depleted, make plans to manage what’s coming in and going out of your life differently. If you’re feeling topped up, identify the practices you need to maintain to be your best self.

DRAIN:

  • Who and what is draining your energy?
  • What steps can you take to eliminate or decrease these debits from your energy during the upcoming week?

GAIN:

  • Who and what is energizing you?
  • What steps can you take to build more of these positive interactions and experiences in your schedule during the next week?

Friday Reflection

The choices you make today create the life you will live tomorrow. Based on your current habits, is your future one you will get to live or have to live? Decisions, big or small, aren’t isolated events. Whether it’s daily choices about your money, career, or health, they all have a lasting impact. Recognizing this cause-and-effect relationship empowers you to take action with increased intention.
